After spending thirteen years in the NFL playing for teams such as the Houston Oilers, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles and the Los Angeles Rams, you would think the road ahead would slow down for retired quarterback, Dan Pastorini. But what you may not know about Pastorini is that he is a certified speed junkie, literally. In the '70s, Pastorini held four world boat-racing records and is the man who broke the eight-second speed barrier on the water.
Pastorini's life-long addiction to the need for speed started at a young age. His father built a 1/10-mile oval behind the family restaurant in Sonoma, CA, for Pastorini and his buddies to race their ¼ midgets. The end of high school found Dan racing his '67 SS Chevelle at the Freemont Drag Strip. And later, while playing for the NFL, Dan began racing boats, capturing four world records. However, his boat-racing career abruptly ended with an accident in 1976.
Upon retiring from the NFL, Dan raced top-fuel dragsters from 1984 - 1991. He has since moved on, competing in the Sports Car Club of America, GTP-2 class. In February, Pastorini kicked off the 2004 season with a "First in Class" and "30th Overall" at the 48 Hours of Seabring in Florida. He now has his sights set on competing in the 2004 Grand Am Series.
The car Dan is racing now was originally a 1976 Porsche purchased on eBay. A ground-up build by Sam Shalala of Pro Technik provided Dan with a 1993 body style sitting on a 1996-1998 factory RSR suspension system. The power plant is a 3.8L, naturally aspirated, air-cooled, 370 horsepower engine built by Peter Dahl.
Aside from building Dan's car, Shalala and Dahl help keep the car in top racing condition. According to Shalala, the cornerstone of a reliable and competitive racecar is regular maintenance using Kendall's GT-1®. Unlike other oils, Shalala says he has never experienced oil failure using Kendall. And for Pastorini, who has been a faithful user of Kendall since 1974, there is only one option, "Kendall is what I run."
